Auto Accident Injury
by Curt White on 01/12/12With any traumatic jolt to the body (like a Car Accident) we have potential for soft tissue injury, known as sprain or strain. These soft tissue micro-tears heal with scar tissue which is not as pliable as the original tissue. This loss of elasticity creates greater risk of future pain in that area when stressed from normal daily activity. Chiropractic manipulation is not just to rebalance and improve mobility of the spine but to stretch the scar tissue so you heal with a more functional scar less prone to future irritation. Ideally manipulation is administered in the first six to eight weeks post trauma to avoid permanent damage. At White Chiropractic we have extensive experience in handling soft tissue injury.
The Aging Spine
by Curt White on 11/10/11Most patients start Chiropractic care for pain ,however, many continue as a maintenance patient. One of the benefits of regular Chiropractic care is improved overall health, reduction of pain flare-ups and preventing spinal degeneration. Regular adjustments prolong the health of our spine by relieving stress and pressure that wears out the joints. More people are learning that you can be proactive in preserving spinal health and function by stretching, strength work and regular Chiropractic check-ups.
Low Back Pain & The Lumbar Disc
by Curt White on 05/23/11Damage can occur to your spinal discs long before you feel it, due to the way discs are constructed. The disc in the spine is made of a gel-like substance in the center called the nucleus pulposus. Surrounding the nucleus and containing it is a ring of cartilage called the annulus fibrosis. It is in this outer ring of cartilage where nerve fibers are found. The abundance of nerve fibers are in the outer third of the cartilage so the nucleus must push all the way to the outer third before you percieve pain. Your disc problem started long before you felt the pain. We have several natural effective methods to treat disc injury including spinal decompression, Chiropractic manipulation and electrotherapy.
Preventing Yardwork Back Injury
by Curt White on 05/05/11With the beautiful warm weather here I have been seeing many patients with "yardwork & outdoor project" related back strain injury. Pressure and tension builds gradually in all spines just from normal innocent daily activity. We are often unaware of this building tension until we put extra physical demands on our spine and pain begins. Regular maintenance Chiropractic adjustments release this tension from continually building so we are able to exert ourselves with less chance of injury. Keep in mind if we are not stretching and exercising periodically we are getting tighter and weaker as we age. Before beginning a new exercise routine get checked by your Chiropractor to balance and align your spine to handle the new demands.
Get Your Spine Ready For Spring
by Curt White on 03/09/11With the warm weather upon us many people are returning to golf, tennis, yardwork, etc. Regular Chiropractic adjustments can prevent aggravation by these activities. All of our spines are under tremendous stress and force due to normal daily activities. The Chiropractor can prevent this tension from continuing to build to the point of a flare up. Spinal adjustments remove pressure and balance our spines making them better able to handle the daily stress we subject ourselves to.
Whiplash Injury
by Curt White on 01/27/11
If you suffer a signifigant fall, jolt or auto accident it is critical to be checked by a Chiropractor within a few weeks of the incident. The initial pain and soreness is due to soft-tissues strain sprain, however, any trauma forceful enough to injure soft-tissue will disrupt the alignment of spinal bones. If the strain sprain heals without balancing the spinal posture through Chiropractic this will cause early degeneration and potentially chronic recurrent pain within three to five years. Chiropractic treatment now can prevent chronic problems later in life.
Spinal Decompression Treatment Phases
by Curt White on 12/02/10Decompression treatment is very gentle and pain free. The patient lies on a padded table fully clothed for approximately 20 minutes . The first session is the lightest, the table moves in small increments with short periods of rest. Spinal decompression is a safe treatment that should be considered before surgery or epidural injection. The first phase involves reduction of pain and symptoms. To gain a more lasting relief the second phase involves a gradual increase in the pulling force which causes a strengthening of the ligaments over time.
How does Chiropractic work?
by Curt White on 11/11/10
Chiropractic works by restoring your bodies ability to be healthy. When under the proper control of the nervous system all organs, tissues, and cells of the body are better able to resist disease and ill health. The Chiropractor's approach to better health is to remove nerve interference ( misaligned vertebrae ). With improved spinal function comes improved nervous system. The goal of Chiropractic is to remove nerve interference that may be limiting health with specific Chiropractic adjustments, allowing the body to heal itself. A healthy spine and lifestyle are keys to good health.
Chiropractic and the Child Athlete
by Curt White on 10/25/10
Participation in youth athletics carries risks to the young spine that may manifest in chronic spinal pain in adult-hood. The stress and force from sport can cause imbalance in the child athlete. This can lead to pain or greater risk of injury. Treatment by a Chiropractor during or post season can minimize traumatically induced spinal misalignment. Year round athletes are particularly susceptible to repetitive strain or cumulative trauma disorder and should be checked regularly by their Chiropractor. As a former Olympic athlete I have seen the benefits of Chiropractic care first hand.
How long will it take to get better?
by Curt White on 10/12/10
Back and neck pain are the two most common conditions I see. Patients want to know how long will it take to see improvement. I use a one to ten rule for treatment visits. Natural healing is very unpredictable, however, the average patient will see improvement within three to four treatments. We have quite a few cases where patients feel dramatically better after one visit although the relief may be temporary. Ongoing treatment corrects the cause of the problem and allows for strengthening and balance to return to the spine triggering a more lasting relief. Our most stubborn chronic cases may need as many as eight to ten visits, however, ten treatments is our red flag number. If the patient is not showing improvement by the tenth treatment further testing and referral to another type of specialist is appropriate. Chiropractic is a great first option for treatment of spinal pain being a natural healing method it is preferred over drugs and surgery due to its level of safety and true correction of the cause of the problem.
Chiropractic Myths
by Curt White on 09/23/101. Chiropractic treatments are painful. The techniques I use are gentle enough to be used with children and seniors with osteoporosis. Most Chiropractic adjustments actually feel good. 2. Once you start with a Chiropractor you have to keep going back. Nothing changes making you now dependent, however, we can't remove gravity, bodyweight, or daily stress and tension therefore many patients opt for monthly preventive maintenance for optimum health. Our office is located in the Mooresville Gateway at exit 33 convenient to Huntersville, Statesville, Troutman, Davidson, and Cornelius.
Minor Auto Accident?
by Curt White on 09/09/10Many people are involved in minor accidents or falls every day. They may be only slightly sore for a few days or weeks and seem fine, however, if delicate spinal balance has been disrupted it could result in chronic back or neck pain years later. A spine that is out of alignment will degenerate faster and increase the odds of developing pain. After any fall or jolt you should be checked by a Chiropractor to prevent future issues. A regular maintenance adjustment for optimal spine and nerve function is advisable regardless due to the fact that our spines are under tremendous stress and force from our normal activities of daily living. Chiropractic care is one of the best things you can do for your bodies long term health.

Chiropractic and Epigenetics
by Curt White on 07/22/10Ever since DNA was discovered in 1953 it has been our number one excuse for poor health, and lack of success. "I have diabetes. I inherited it from my mother." "I can't help it its in my genes." We've been taught that our appearance, behaviour, and health are the result of unchangeable DNA. The University of Utah Genetic Learning Center has discovered we can change the expression of our genetic code by altering the epigenetic layer covering our DNA effectively turning certain genes on or off. The epigenetic layer responds to external stimuli-everything from diet, stress, exercise and even our thoughts. The brain signals the changes needed and Chiropractic helps that signal reach its destination. This helps explain why patients recieving Chiropractic frequently report improvement in a variety of body functions other than the original back or neck pain that brought them in.
Workout Tips
by Curt White on 07/12/10I remember when the emphasis in exercise was placed on cardio and hitting the target heart rate zone. Now strength exercises and short bursts of high intensity are becoming popular. I prefer to "superset" or combine two, three, or four exercises and rotate between them. This way you get your cardio and strength together and since you are rotating the exercises you don't need to rest between sets saving time. Remember to vary your repetition numbers when doing strength work. I tend to do alot of 10 and 20 repetition sets but occasionally I will do a 60 rep set. I like to throw in a 30 to 40 second jump rope in between the strength movements. After a series of Chiropractic treatments the body will benefit from and retain its progress through exercise better. As a Mooresville Chiropractor I am available for consultation.
